It is believed that Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, who founded Tibetan Buddhism, meditated at the site en route to Tibet. The name “Muktinath” is a combination of “Mukti”, which means “Salvation or Nirvana“, and “Nath”, which means “God or Master“. This Sanskrit name holds great significance for spiritual people across the South Asian sub-continent and carries strong emotional connotations for devout Hindus.
