Upon arrival at Lhasa Gonggar Airport, you will be transferred to your hotel or teahouse in Lhasa to rest and acclimatize to the high altitude of approximately 3,650 meters. The day is kept light to help prevent altitude sickness, with optional short excursions such as a gentle walk around Barkhor Street to experience Tibetan daily life, visit local markets for handicrafts, or enjoy a traditional Tibetan butter tea at a nearby teahouse. In the evening, you can have an early dinner at the hotel or a local restaurant and rest, preparing for the sightseeing-filled days ahead.
After breakfast, begin your day with a visit to the iconic Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lama, exploring its grand halls, chapels, and stunning views of Lhasa. Continue to Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism, and walk around Barkhor Street to experience the vibrant local market and traditional Tibetan life. In the afternoon, visit one of Lhasa’s renowned monasteries, such as Sera or Drepung, to witness monks debating and practicing their daily rituals. Return to your hotel or teahouse in the evening to relax and prepare for the scenic drive to Gyantse the following day.
After breakfast, depart from Lhasa and drive along the Friendship Highway towards Gyantse, enjoying the breathtaking landscapes of the Tibetan plateau. En route, stop at Yamdrok Lake, a turquoise gem surrounded by snow-capped mountains, perfect for photography and short walks along its shores. Continue to Karo La Glacier, witnessing the striking ice formations and panoramic Himalayan views. Arrive in Gyantse in the late afternoon and visit Pelkor Chode Monastery and the impressive Gyantse Kumbum, a unique multi-tiered stupa. Overnight stay will be in a local hotel or teahouse, enjoying the serene atmosphere of this historic town.
After breakfast, drive from Gyantse to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city, passing through scenic highland landscapes and small Tibetan villages. On the way, stop for panoramic views of the Himalayas and capture the stunning plateau scenery. In Shigatse, visit the majestic Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, and explore its chapels, statues, and sacred halls. For those interested, an optional detour to Rongbuk Monastery provides a view of Everest’s north face from afar. In the evening, check into a local hotel or teahouse in Shigatse and rest for the next leg of the journey.
After breakfast, depart from Shigatse and drive across the vast Tibetan plateau toward the Tingri or Saga region. The journey takes you over several high mountain passes, offering spectacular views of the Himalayas, including distant glimpses of Everest on clear days. Along the route, stop at scenic points for photography and short walks to experience the plateau’s unique terrain and nomadic culture. Arrive in the evening at a local guesthouse or teahouse in Tingri or Saga, where you can rest and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, preparing for the descent toward the Nepal border the next day.
After breakfast, continue your journey from Tingri or Saga toward Gyirong, the Tibetan border town with Nepal, driving through some of the most dramatic landscapes of the Tibetan plateau. Pass high-altitude plains, rugged mountain ranges, and sparkling streams, witnessing the gradual descent from Tibet’s arid highlands into greener, more fertile terrain. Stop along the way for photography and short breaks to take in the breathtaking Himalayan vistas. Arrive in Gyirong by late afternoon, check into a local guesthouse or teahouse, and prepare for the border crossing into Nepal the following day.
After an early breakfast, complete the formalities at the Gyirong (Kyirong) border to enter Nepal. Once across, begin the drive through Nepal’s scenic landscapes, passing lush hills, rivers, and traditional villages along the way. Enjoy the gradual descent from the high Tibetan plateau into the Kathmandu Valley, taking in views of terraced fields and local life. Arrive in Kathmandu by evening, transfer to your hotel or teahouse, and relax after the long journey, preparing for sightseeing in the city the next day.
After breakfast, spend the day exploring the rich cultural heritage of the Kathmandu Valley. Visit Durbar Square, the historic heart of the city with its palaces, temples, and courtyards, then head to Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) for panoramic views of Kathmandu and insights into Buddhist traditions. Continue to Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world, and soak in the spiritual atmosphere while observing local rituals. In the evening, explore local markets or enjoy traditional Nepali cuisine before returning to your hotel or teahouse for overnight stay.
On the final day of your journey, enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your hotel or teahouse in Kathmandu. Depending on your flight schedule, you can use the morning for last-minute shopping, a stroll through local markets, or a short visit to nearby cultural sites.
