Trip Information
The 13-day Manaslu Tour by Jeep is the perfect fusion of off-road adventure and cultural immersion, designed for travelers who want to experience the magnificence of the Manaslu region without days of trekking. This journey takes you through ancient mountain villages, scenic river valleys, and culturally rich landscapes as we loop around the majestic Mount Manaslu (8,163 m)—the eighth-highest mountain in the world.
Rather than spending weeks on foot, this overland itinerary gives you access to the region’s most captivating highlights using sturdy 4WD jeeps. From the stone hamlets of Philim and Namrung to the mystical monasteries of Samagaun and the dramatic high passes of Lho and Samdo, this route delivers spectacular Himalayan vistas, cultural encounters, and local traditions without compromise.
Itinerary
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Arughat, a bustling trade town at the edge of the Manaslu region. The route offers beautiful views of green hills, terraced farms, and distant snow-capped peaks as you gradually leave the Kathmandu Valley behind.
We continue deeper into the Budi Gandaki Valley, crossing suspension bridges and following winding mountain roads to reach Machha Khola. Along the way, you’ll witness dramatic river gorges, remote villages, and serene hillsides dotted with waterfalls.
Today’s drive takes us to the quaint stone village of Jagat, the official entry point to the Manaslu Conservation Area. You’ll have time to walk around, interact with the locals, and observe the charming Tibetan-influenced architecture.
We pass through lush pine forests and dramatic cliffside trails to reach the culturally rich village of Philim. Continuing onward, the trail becomes wilder and quieter as we reach Deng, a small village nestled beside the roaring Budi Gandaki River.
Climbing higher into the Manaslu region, today’s journey brings us to Namrung, a beautiful stone-built village with excellent views of Mt. Himalchuli and Ganesh Himal. This area marks the beginning of the Tibetan Buddhist cultural zone, with prayer flags fluttering across the trails.
After a leisurely morning, we drive to Lho, one of the most culturally significant villages on the route. Visit the ancient Ribung Monastery and enjoy sunset views of Mt. Manaslu glowing in the distance.
Today we head to Samagaun, the largest and most vibrant village in the region, nestled below Mt. Manaslu. Here, you can explore the village, visit the monastery, or simply relax and adjust to the altitude.
Use this rest day to acclimatize or take an optional hike to Pungyen Gompa or Manaslu Base Camp for breathtaking mountain views. The peaceful ambiance and cultural richness of the area make this a rewarding stop.
A short scenic drive brings you to the remote settlement of Samdo, just a few kilometers from the Tibetan border. This windswept village offers views of towering glaciers and insight into the traditional lifestyles of high-altitude communities.
We begin our return journey by descending from Samdo back to Lho, allowing for more photography stops and relaxed exploration of this spiritual village. Take a short evening walk to revisit the monastery or interact with local school children.
Descending further, we return to Philim, where traditional Gurung culture and Buddhist heritage remain vibrant. This scenic ride allows you to reflect on the high-altitude experience as the landscapes change gradually.
Leaving the highlands behind, we return to Arughat with views of rolling hills, farmland, and villages along the Budi Gandaki River. Celebrate the completion of your overland Manaslu adventure with a comfortable night in this riverside town.
Our final day takes us back to the hustle of Kathmandu through scenic countryside roads. As we conclude the journey, you’ll carry with you unforgettable memories of mountains, monasteries, and meaningful encounters.
