Itinerary
Your adventure kicks off with a morning flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa, soaring over the breathtaking Himalayas. Covering roughly 1,160 km in about 1 hour 40 minutes, the flight offers stunning aerial views of snow-capped peaks and glacial valleys—a perfect start to your Bhutan journey.
Upon arrival in Lhasa, complete immigration and Tibet travel permit formalities, then embark on a scenic overland drive to the Gyirong border, a journey of about 450 km through winding mountain roads, rivers, and villages. After crossing into Bhutan and completing entry formalities (1–2 hours), continue the final 120 km drive to Punakha.
By evening, you will arrive in Punakha, having covered roughly 1,730 km including flight and road travel over 16–20 hours. Check into your riverside hotel, unwind, and take a short stroll along the Pho Chhu River. This first day is all about travel and acclimatization, so relax, enjoy the valley’s serene atmosphere, and prepare for the cultural experiences ahead.
After breakfast, immerse yourself in the heart of Punakha Valley with visits to Punakha Dzong, the iconic “Palace of Great Happiness,” and Chimi Lhakhang, the charming fertility temple surrounded by rice fields. Enjoy short walks through local villages, interacting with residents and experiencing Bhutanese rural life. In the afternoon, take a gentle hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten for panoramic valley views. Today covers around 40–50 km with scenic stops and light walking—perfect for photography, cultural immersion, and enjoying the peaceful riverside surroundings.
After breakfast, drive approximately 120 km from Punakha to Thimphu, taking 3–4 hours along scenic mountain roads and stopping at the Punakha Suspension Bridge for photos. Once in Thimphu, explore cultural highlights including Tashichho Dzong, Buddha Dordenma, and the National Memorial Chorten, then visit handicraft markets for souvenirs. The day combines scenic travel with cultural discovery, offering plenty of opportunities to capture Bhutan’s stunning landscapes and vibrant traditions.
Spend the day exploring the highlights of Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu. Visit Tashichho Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and central monastery, followed by the Buddha Dordenma Statue for panoramic views of the valley. Stop by the National Memorial Chorten to observe local religious life, and browse the handicraft markets for traditional textiles and souvenirs.
