Trip Information

The Upper Mustang 12-Day Tour is an immersive journey into the “Last Forbidden Kingdom” of Nepal, combining cultural exploration, dramatic landscapes, and adventure. Unlike lower Himalayan treks, Upper Mustang lies in the rain-shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, offering desert-like landscapes, deep canyons, and Tibetan-influenced villages. Once a restricted kingdom, the region has preserved its medieval architecture, monasteries, and spiritual heritage, making it a unique destination for travelers.

Over twelve days, you’ll traverse through Pokhara, Jomsom, Kagbeni, Ghami, Lo Manthang, Chhoser, Tsarang, and other ancient villages. The tour offers a mix of jeep rides, short hikes, and cultural exploration, allowing you to experience Mustang’s stunning scenery and rich history at a relaxed pace. This itinerary is ideal for travelers seeking adventure, culture, and breathtaking Himalayan vistas.

Itinerary

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Jomsom, following the Kali Gandaki Gorge – the world’s deepest gorge. From Jomsom, trek to Kagbeni, the official gateway to Upper Mustang. Kagbeni is a charming medieval village with stone houses, narrow lanes, and a centuries-old monastery. Overnight stay at Kagbeni.

The trail follows the Kali Gandaki River and gradually ascends into the restricted Upper Mustang region. You’ll cross suspension bridges, walk through sandy riverbeds, and enjoy views of barren cliffs and caves carved into the rocks. After passing Tangbe village with its whitewashed houses and barley fields, you’ll reach Chele, where Tibetan culture becomes more evident.

Today’s trek is full of ascents and descents through dry terrain, rocky ridges, and small passes such as Taklam La and Dajori La. Along the way, you’ll see prayer flags, chortens, and spectacular views of Nilgiri and Annapurna ranges. By evening, you’ll reach Syangboche, a quiet village surrounded by unique landscapes.

Leaving Syangboche, the trail passes through the picturesque Yamda La pass and crosses rugged canyons and villages with traditional houses. You’ll descend towards Ghami, one of the largest villages in Upper Mustang. Ghami is surrounded by cultivated fields, chortens, and the longest Mani wall in Mustang, making it a culturally rich stopover.

The trek continues across rocky trails with stunning red cliffs and deep canyons. You’ll reach Charang, a village known for its ancient fortress-like monastery and large collection of Tibetan scriptures. The landscapes here are breathtaking, with barren hills contrasting against snowcapped Himalayan peaks.

Today is a highlight of the trek as you enter the walled city of Lo Manthang, the capital of the Mustang Kingdom. The city is home to centuries-old monasteries such as Thubchen and Jampa, as well as the former royal palace. Lo Manthang feels like stepping back in time, with its preserved Tibetan culture and architecture. Overnight stay in Lo Manthang.
