Trip Information
The Everest Base Camp & Rongbuk Monastery Trek is a bucket-list adventure for mountaineers, trekkers, and culture seekers. This trek combines the stunning landscapes of the Khumbu region — including Sherpa villages, Sagarmatha National Park, and high-altitude passes — with a spiritual experience at the Rongbuk Monastery in Tibet, the highest monastery in the world. You will trek through iconic Himalayan scenery, encounter Sherpa culture, and reach the base of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest (8,848m), before experiencing Tibet’s sacred Rongbuk Monastery for breathtaking views of Everest’s north face.
Itinerary
Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, where you’ll be welcomed by your representative and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, take some time to rest or explore Thamel, the bustling tourist hub of Kathmandu, with shops, cafes, and local markets. In the evening, attend a briefing session about the Everest Base Camp and Rongbuk Monastery trek, covering permits, flights, and trekking preparation.
After an early breakfast, take a scenic morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. From Lukla, begin your trek following the Dudh Koshi River, passing through small villages, suspension bridges, and rhododendron forests. Arrive in Phakding by afternoon and settle into your tea house.
After breakfast, continue trekking along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges and passing through traditional Sherpa villages. The trail gradually ascends through pine forests and terraced fields. Arrive at Namche Bazaar, the vibrant Sherpa town and main trading hub of the Khumbu region, offering spectacular views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku.
Today is an acclimatization day to help your body adjust to the higher altitude. Take a short hike to Tengboche Monastery, one of the most famous monasteries in the Khumbu region, or visit the Everest View Hotel for panoramic views of Everest and Ama Dablam. Explore the local markets and interact with Sherpa locals to learn about their culture and lifestyle.
After breakfast, trek through the scenic Khumbu Valley, crossing the Imja Khola River and passing traditional Sherpa villages. The trail gradually ascends to Dingboche, a picturesque village surrounded by terraced fields and offering stunning views of Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Island Peak. Dingboche serves as an excellent spot for altitude acclimatization before heading higher.
Spend the day acclimatizing to high altitude. After breakfast, you can take a short hike to nearby hills or ridges to enjoy panoramic views of Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam. Optional excursions include visiting Chhukung village or a gentle hike toward Nangkartshang Peak. This day helps prepare your body for the higher elevations ahead.
After breakfast, continue trekking along the Khumbu Valley, passing through rocky landscapes and small hamlets. Stop at the memorials for climbers who lost their lives on Everest, a solemn reminder of the mountain’s challenges. Arrive at Lobuche, a small settlement near the Khumbu Glacier, surrounded by stunning views of Pumori, Nuptse, and Lingtren.
After an early breakfast, trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep, the last stop before Everest Base Camp. Continue onward to Everest Base Camp, where you can explore the area, take photographs, and soak in the awe-inspiring views of Mount Everest’s Khumbu Glacier and towering peaks. In the late afternoon, return to Gorak Shep for overnight.
Pre-dawn, hike to Kala Patthar, the best viewpoint for sunrise over Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Pumori. After taking in the spectacular views and photos, descend to Gorak Shep for breakfast, then continue trekking down through Lobuche to Pheriche, a peaceful village nestled in the valley.
After breakfast, begin your descent through the scenic Khumbu Valley, passing small villages, forests, and the Dudh Koshi River. Enjoy views of Everest and surrounding peaks along the way. Arrive in Namche Bazaar by late afternoon and relax after the long trek.
After breakfast, continue descending through the Sherpa villages and pine forests, crossing suspension bridges and rivers along the trail. Arrive in Lukla by afternoon, completing the Khumbu section of your trek. Take time to rest and enjoy the evening in the small mountain town.
Take a morning flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu, enjoying stunning aerial views of the Himalayan peaks. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and spend the rest of the day relaxing, shopping, or exploring Kathmandu at your own pace.
After an early breakfast, take a flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa. Upon arrival, complete Tibet entry formalities and then drive north across the Tibetan Plateau toward Rongbuk Monastery, located near the north face of Mount Everest. Enjoy the stunning landscapes of high-altitude plains, glaciers, and Himalayan peaks along the way.
Early morning, visit Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world, and enjoy breathtaking views of Everest’s North Face. Take photographs, explore the monastery, and soak in the spiritual atmosphere. Afterward, drive back to Lhasa, stopping along the way for photos and sightseeing.
Overnight in Lhasa or hotel depending on flight schedule.
After breakfast, take a flight from Lhasa back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel or directly to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward flight. This concludes your Everest Base Camp & Rongbuk Monastery Trek, with memories of the Himalayas and Tibetan landscapes.
